Biography of Steven Murphy

Steven P. Murphy was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Christie’s in September 2010. An experienced leader, Mr. Murphy is responsible for the overall strategy and management of the company. Prior to joining Christie’s, he held several senior executive positions in the media industry, most recently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Rodale Inc., the US based publishing company.

Steven’s sense for business and international brand management has made him into a very highly regarded leader in a range of different industries. Steven joined Rodale in 2000 as the Chief Operating Officer, and was appointed to Chief Executive in 2002. At Rodale, he oversaw the most profitable period in its 69-year history. Under his management, Rodale produced a robust and expansive portfolio of media properties and branded content, and executed a dramatic expansion into international markets, with 85 editions of Rodale's magazines now available around the world.

Prior to joining Rodale, Steven was an Executive Vice President and Managing Director for Disney Publishing Worldwide since 1998. From 1991 to 1998, he led a record label group for EMI music as President. From 1985 to 1991, Mr. Murphy headed a publishing group for Simon & Schuster, as a division President. He holds a bachelor's degree in English literature from Georgetown University.

At Christie’s Mr. Murphy will focus on developing Christie’s global brand, strengthening the core business, regional businesses, focusing on growth markets and diversified business opportunities.
